Process development

Research process equipment designed on campus.

Forming, sintering, finishing and magnetizing form one controlled chain in magnet research. ISIT’s process equipment is organised around that chain.

  1. 01 Feed

    Rare-earth conversion and powder preparation.

  2. 02 Form

CIP to 2,500 bar. Green bodies up to Ø250 × 400 mm.

  3. 03 Sinter

Vacuum 3×10⁻⁴ mbar, 1,200 °C, molybdenum heaters for SmCo and NdFeB.

  4. 04 Finish

    Grind, coat, magnetize, laser mark.

Vacuum process equipment

Cold isostatic press

300 × 150 mm. 2,500 bar. PLC controlled. Compacts to Ø250 × 400 mm.

Vacuum sintering

1,200 °C. 3×10⁻⁴ mbar. Chamber Ø280 × 300 mm. Mo-wire heaters.

Tube furnaces

To 1,250 °C. Hot zones 250 mm and 500 mm. Programmable controllers.

Pulsed power supplies

Magnet charging and discharging. Documented bank energies: 6 kJ, 10 kJ, 24 kJ, 50 kJ and 500 kJ.

Metallic powders

Highly spherical powders, nano to micrometre, aluminium (660 °C) to tungsten (3422 °C). Spheroidization of atomized, sponge, crushed and spray-dried feedstock.

Powder metallurgy

Powder-metallurgy development of parts using CIP of green compacts and vacuum sintering. Sample size depends on geometry.

Precision casting

Ceramic shell moulds and vacuum investment casting. Grain sizes below 10 µm achievable.

Coating

Ni, Cu and Zn electroplating. PVD on machining and surgical tools.

Machine shop

Lathe, shaper, wire-cut, surface / cylindrical / centerless grind. Laser marking for sample identification.
